Subject: Former LS4 Student touching base

Hi,

You probably don’t remember me, I took your LS4 (Genetics) class several years ago as an undergrad and since I was doing well in the class, I didn’t come to many office hours. (In retrospect, I realize that choice was foolish.) I just wanted to let you know that you made LS4 one of my favorite classes at UCLA. I remember it as one of the classes that I always looked forward to attending. It was especially interesting for me personally since I am biracial and you gave that cool lecture on symmetry and genetics. Since then I’ve always been curious to see how symmetrical I am! As a result of your class, I became even more interested in genetics and took several more classes in the topic as elective courses.

I’m currently in Madagascar working as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I occasionally meet up with some of the researchers here who are doing population sampling with the lemurs (and usually arguing whether to split or join different species/subspecies). It’s nice to have had a class at UCLA that prepared me to help them in their work. Some people are working on studying digit proportions in lemurs, but thus far no symmetry studies. At this point I’m more worried about the preservation of the animals and plants that I love, so the projects I get involved in are more on the conservation end of things.

Anyways, I hope you are doing well. Keep up the good work as one of the few professors who takes the teaching side of their job to heart.
